About the Surrey United Performance Academy

Year-round Academy Program for Club Select Players
Learn to play Soccer from the Professionals

Surrey United is one of the most progressive player development clubs in Canada .
Under the direction of our Technical Director Craig Dalrymple and Assistant Technical Director, Derek Possee we are seeing our club players improving in all aspects of the game. We are therefore continuing to provide high level training opportunities for our committed players. Committed players and parents will always seek out the best coaching and learning environment. In the past many have looked outside the club for this. We are now very pleased to say that they have no need to look any further than their own club.

There are three separate, but linked, programs in the academy year.

We are very pleased to welcome Derek Possee to our new SUPA Soccer Academy at Surrey United starting September 2005. Derek holds a National B coaching license and joins Goalkeeper coach Tony Waiters as part of Craig Dalrymple’s hand picked team of qualified coaches and ex-professional players.

Derek played for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American Soccer League after a very distinguished professional career in England. He was 17 years old when he played his first game for Tottenham Hotspurs one of the most famous clubs in London.

Derek delighted the crowd that day with a dream debut goal.

Derek went on to play for 16 years in the English Professional Leagues with teams such as Millwall, who paid 25,000 pounds for him, the most expensive player they had bought up to that time. He went on to play for Crystal Palace and Leyton Orient, and when at Orient he had the opportunity to play against Manchester United.

Though small in height, Derek could out jump most of the defenders he played against and became a recognized goal scorer in the English Professional leagues. He brought those goal scoring skills with him when he signed for the Vancouver Whitecaps and proceeded to tie for the Whitecaps, club scoring title.

Derek won the hearts of the Vancouver Whitecaps fans with this persistent play around the goal.

He was the head coach of the Canadian national U-16 Boys Youth development Team from 2001 through 2003.

Derek Possee was appointed Provincial Head Coach of the British Columbia Soccer Association and he made many changes to two of the Association’s largest programs. .

Under his jurisdiction came the British Columbia Player Development Program. He was instrumental in implementing the Player Development Identification Camps, which were held throughout the province of B.C, involving over 1500 youth players. Because of this initiative, for the first time ever, 30% of B.C.’s All-Star teams were comprised of players from outside the Lower Mainland.

This Player Development Program became the building block for a very successful Provincial All-Star Program. This program saw many improvements under his guidance.
Derek was instrumental in developing many of B.C.’s top soccer players using the 8 Rinks Sports Complex in Burnaby as a focal point. Once he had the BCSA programs centralized and under control he established the B.C. Soccer Association’s Provincial/National High Performance Centre and the Academy of Soccer Education.
This initiative helped B.C.’s best players get recognized for selection to all of Canada’s National Teams, both girls and boys.

We welcome Derek to our Academy and look forward to him sharing his wealth of professional experiences and his coaching expertise with our Surrey United players.
