| Men PCSL team
Surrey United opened their 2007 PCSL campaign with a pair of home games at Cloverdale Athletic Park against Okanagan opponents which saw United emerge victorious in both games to leave them atop the standings which represents a very encouraging start for this young team.
Saturday's game against Kamloops Excel was full of incident as United raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes thanks to goals from Angus Burke and Sunny Bains. However, during that time United lost the services of two players. In the fifth minute, United lost midfielder Vince Stewart with a severe ankle injury after a late tackle and then lost midfielder Ted Ullrich who was red carded for a "Beckham like impetuous kick" while lay on the ground after being dumped by an opponent. No contact was made and the red card decision seemed to be a harsh punishment. Kamloops took advantage of the outnumbered situation and reduced the deficit when Nordin scored. United's ten men responded well and were led by the brilliance and industry of Colin Phillips in midfield who notched his third assist of the game when he set up United 17 year old David Adams for the third goal which the youngster finished with the coolness of a veteran. Kamloops made the game interesting again by scoring a second just before the interval. The game became scrappy throughout the second half which saw United notch an insurance marker when Sunny Bain's shot cum cross was deflected past his own keeper by a Kamloops defender.
On Sunday United took on Kelowna 's Okanagan Challenge and beat their opponents 2-1 thanks to a pair of late goals by striker Rizal Ganief. United played some eye-catching soccer but just lacked the final touch to convert the build up into goals. The visitors took the lead against the run of play when the lively Travis Moore pounced onto a defensive miscue and then slotted the ball into the corner of the net. The pattern of the play remained similar throughout the game with Surrey enjoying the bulk of the possession thanks to the creative play and distribution of Colin Phillips and Okanagan looking dangerous on the counter-attack. With time winding down Surrey 's fine play was finally rewarded with a goal in the 78 th minute when fine play out wide by Steffano Pannu saw him cut inside him past two defenders before slotting the ball into the path of striker Rizal Ganief who hammered a powerful shot past the visitor's keeper to level the scores. Surrey were not content with the tie and surged forward in search of the winner which came in the 87 th minute when Ganief fired home a left foot shot from fifteen yards into the corner of the net after some good work by fellow striker Angus Burke to set up the opportunity.

Women PCSL team
Surrey United's recently formed young women's PCSL team boasting an average age of nineteen traveled to Bellingham on Saturday and secured a 2-1 victory over PSSA Rapids.
United started strongly pinning the home team inside their own half and after 15minutes of play Surrey took a deserved lead when Kuljeet Gill's threaded pass sent 17yr old Ellen Kuyer racing through and Kuyer hammered a powerful right foot shot high into the net. Surrey continued to carry the play and both Karley Scrigner and Gill had opportunities to score but were unable to convert.
After the interval the Rapids came out stronger than the first half and the game ebbed back and forth. In the seventieth minute the Rapids tied up the scores when Mandy Milton pounced on a poor clearance and burst through the middle to hit a rising shot past United netminder Brielan Smiechowksi. Surrey responded positively and Kuyer, Gill and Scrigner all came close to scoring before Gill potted the winner with ten minutes remaining when she picked up the ball at the edge of the penalty area, jinked one way then turned sharply to fire a low shot into the corner of the net. The goal sealed the victory for Surrey who based on the overall balance of play were full value for the win. |
