| The Surrey United Umbro
Development League Under 21 team took the field against an experienced
Kamloops side on Saturday where United ended up on the wrong end
of a 3-1 final score. United, looking to rebound from a first game
loss to start the season made the 4 hour venture with limited numbers
early Saturday morning and were welcomed by the wet conditions in
Kamloops. However, they started the game brightly creating scoring
chances almost at will, and then finally converted on a clever build
up and a fantastic chipped ball goal scored by 15 year old David
Craig for a 1-0 lead.
The goal, unfortunately, had an adverse effect on United. Instead
of pushing forward to build on their lead they seemed content to
sit back and absorbed the pressure Kamloops put on them. It was
a strategy that proved to be United’s undoing when a defensive
miscue lead to the tying goal. Kamloops added another marker very
late into the first when Surrey failed to clear a floated corner
kick with the ball landing at the feet of the Kamloops striker who
calmly hammered it into the top corner of the net. The insertion
of substitute Ryan Belton at half-time proved to be the second half
boost United needed and as the game flowed back and forth both teams
traded opportunities. However, it was Kamloops who eventually notched
the insurance marker with the only goal of the half coming late
when United’s second half keeper Taylor Weakes narrowly failed
to beat out a high shot.
The game followed the under 21 game and the women continued where
they had left off the previous with lots of possession and territorial
advantage but no goals to show for a dominating first half. Plenty
of shots were struck high and wide and plenty of weak attempts were
shot straight at the keeper but nothing found it’s way into
the net. |

The closest they came
to scoring was a Kate Qually left foot drive that bounced off the
cross-bar with the keeper beaten on the play.
The second half continued in much the same vain until the 65th
minute when Bianca Wilkinson pounced on a half cleared corner-kick
by United’s Geri Donnelly and then smashed a low eighteen
yard shot past the home team keeper. The game had the same feel
as last week’s game against Victoria but unfortunately the
result didn’t come out the same because Kamloops finally cracked
United’s strong defence to smash home a late equalizer in
the 82nd Minute.
It was then full speed to Penticton for the men’s PCSL game
which ended up in a 2-1 win for the home team. United coughed up
two earl goals and then proceeded to take the game to the home side.
Matt Osborne hit the post with one effort and saw another goal bound
attempt blocked on the line by a defender. Joseph Nakhla also guided
two clear headers the wrong side (for United) of the post. The chances
continued to be wasted until the thirtieth minute when substitute
Dave Hleucka spectacularly volleyed home Shawn Blakeway’s
cross to reduce the deficit before the interval.
The second half proved to be just as frustrating as United failed
to convert several chances to both tie and win the game with Martin
Schaefer’s headed flick probably coming the closest. It was
a frustrating day and there’s only one thing you can do at
such times; get the disco kit on and get down at Night Moves. |
