United Women off to a dream start in PEI

United got off to a dream start with a win against one of the fancied teams beating Ontario 4-3 in a goal fest in the first game of the round robin on Wednesday, October 6th.

The team scored their first goal in the 2nd minute of play when Sara Maglio's right foot shot from twenty yards deceived the Ontario keeper and flew into the top corner of the net. Surrey maintained the pressure but were not able to increase their lead and then in the 40th minute Ontario caught United with a quick counter-attack and levelled the scores with a low shot into the corner of the net. However, Surrey responded immediately and regained the lead shortly before the half when Maglio's tremendous right foot free-kick curled and swerved over the defensive wall and into the net.

Ontario rallied early in the second half and once again pulled level when their forward cut in from the left and hammered a powerful shot past United keeper Wendy Hawthorn.

Surrey came back strongly to enjoy their best period of the game in the next twenty minutes where they played some eye-catching flowing soccer that produced two quality goals.

The first came at the 60 minute mark when the opposing keeper failed to hold onto Bianca Wilkinson"s shot and United forward Megan Blaker pounced onto the rebound to square the ball for Martina Holan-Franko to tap the ball into the empty net from close range.Fifteen minutes later United scored probably the best goal of the game when Wilkinson raced onto Maglio's through ball and fired a deep cross to the back post which was met by a flying header from Franko to complete the United scoring. Some poor defensive coverage at a corner in injury time provided Ontario with a late late consolation goal.
