United Women steamroller New Brunswick in PEI

Martin Foden in Charlottetown, PEI

United started their second round robin game at the Nationals in PEI in a very determined and focused manner. Within 18 minutes they had built up a four goal lead over Fundy Labatt United of New Brunswick to put the outcome of the game beyond any doubt.

Megan Blaker opened the scoring after 8 minutes, chipping the ball over the head of the keeper from fifteen yards after some nice set-up play from Sara Maglio and Sharon Lehnert.

Three minutes later Maglio set up the second for Randee Hermus to hammer home a powerful low shot from twenty yards. Martina Holan-Franko scored for United two minutes later with Maglio again the provider. Then United added their fourth at the 18 minute mark when Maglio scored on a low shot with Blaker and Holan-Franko this time in on the assists.

United took the opportunity to rest some players for tomorrow's key game and the substititutions came thick and fast for the balance of the game. Blaker added United's fifth before the interval with another clever chip.

In the second half United were content not to run up the score but did add two further goals with Bianca Wilkinson racing onto a Vanessa Martino through ball and then slotting it out of the keeper's reach and into the corner of the net.

Natalie Halcro completed the United scoring with a fine solo run beating two defenders before slotting the ball past the advancing keeper. On Saturday United face the other unbeaten team in the group, Athens United from Nova Scotia, who are also last years's champions. United must win to send them into the GOLD Medal game.
