| The weather claimed
all the games this past weekend with the exception of the mens Masters
team and the ladies Under 21. Somewhat ironically, the games were
played side by side on Sunday morning at Cloverdale Athletic Park
on Fields 3 & 4 and both teams registered emphatic 8-0 victories
that provided the spectators with plenty of entertainment and a
plethora of goals.
Our Ladies Under 21 team game dominated their match from start
to finish and stand-in keeper Nicky Carchesio was rarely troubled
in recording a shut-out. This match belonged to SU from start to
finish, with seven different players scoring the eight goals that
were equally divided between the two halves. The first half-goals
started in the tenth minute with leading scorer Ally Pross scoring
the actual game winner and her sixteenth goal of the season after
some nice set-up play by Charday Vonic and Pawan Gill. The second
goal followed just three minutes later with Krystle Gauvin scoring
and Vonic once again assisting on the play. United created a number
of opportunities but didn’t add to their lead until four minutes
before half-time when they struck for two quick goals. The third
came from youth call-up Courtney Duncan with a firm shot into the
roof of the net with Vonic notching her third assist of the game.
The fourth goal came literally just before the whistle with assists
going to Duncan and defender Nicole Stewart. The second half started
with a goal from fellow call-up Jackie Hansen just three minutes
into the before Lexi Iggulden added United’s sixth at the
60 minute mark. The final two goals for United came from Angelica
Singh who hammered a fierce shot into the top corner from twenty
yards and then placed another shot from close range past the bewildered
keeper. The match provided the opportunity to rest some players
and to give others a chance to enjoy some extra playing time. |

The two SU Gold team
players Courtney Duncan and teammate Jackie Hansen both contributed
to the scoring frenzy and demonstrated their soccer skills and ability
to compete at this level. The win increased United’s lead
to ten points over their nearest challenger on top of the League
Standings.
The Surrey United Masters faced Delta Metro on Sunday. Both teams
had to wait until the sun worked it's magic and thawed an icy Cloverdale
pitch. The Master's have outplayed most of their opponents this
season but not enjoyed the success of years past due to a lack of
finishing it's chances. This was not the case on Sunday as Delta
Metro experienced what can happen when Surrey can find the net.
The final score ended 8 - 0 and there were too many scorers to recall
the exact details however, there were several exceptional goals
that come to mind. Steve MacNicoll scored on an amazing header from
a cross that the goalie could only stand and watch as it rocketed
into the top corner. Dave Ellenwood showed his poise and skill as
he chipped an out of position Delta keeper from 25 yards out. Kelly
Bey ran miles and set up many of the goals as his passes were crisp
and concise and striker Murray Howes found the net several times
on the day with some clever runs and excellent finishing. United
sits in third place and is set on cementing a provincial spot and
repeating as champs for this season but the key will be to convert
on a consistent basis the many chances they create each game.
Whilst there was just the two games we decided to select Charday
Vonic as this week’s Player of The Week for setting up the
first three goals for the Ladies Under 21 team. Each Weekly Winner
will have their name entered into a random draw for the monthly
prize of for Dinner for Two. |
