| In premier league action,
Surrey United beat Metro-Ford 3-0 at Cloverdale Athletic Park on
Saturday to maintain their first place overall status in the league.
Surrey were full value for their win and after coming close on two
early opportunities to score, they deservedly took the lead at the
fifteen minute mark when Shawn Blakeway hammered home from close
range after Metro-Ford had failed to clear a Surrey corner-kick.
The balance of the half remained fairly even but a key moment in
the game came just before half-time when Metro-Ford almost levelled
the scores but were thwarted by United keeper Paul Shepherd who
tipped a powerful shot onto the cross-bar. In the second half, United
increased their lead at the sixty minute mark when striker Ryan
Hopp’s perfectly flighted chip shot from twenty yards out
flew over the keeper’s head into the top corner of the net.
Ten minutes later, United midfield ace Todd Stauber rounded off
a flowing move involving Hopp and Sean Crocker which saw Stauber
volley home the perfect strike from fifteen yards. Paul Shepherd
was solid in registering the shut-out and on the one occasion he
was beaten fellow defender Gareth Wilkshire was on hand to clear
the ball off the goal-line.
The men’s Division one game between the two teams was postponed
due to a really serious injury to one of the opposing players where
it soon became obvious that there were far more critical issues
rather than a game of football.

The men’s Under
21 team had no scheduled game and were resting for this week’s
cup-final.
The men’s Division two team suffered one of their biggest
losses of the season going down 4-1 to Vancouver rivals Westside
by a margin of 4-1 with young midfielder Cory Newson getting United’s
lone marker.
In masters action United got back to winning ways thumping rivals
Peace Arch 5-1 at South Surrey Athletic Park.
With both our ladies premier team and the Under 21, not in action,
following their simultaneous semi-final cup losses last weekend,
it was left to the ladies Division One team to fly the flag for
our women’s program. They responded magnificently beating
SBBA 9-2 in a league game. Surprisingly the game only featured two
United scorers Kim Ashford who netted the hat-trick and then leading
scorer Ellen Malterer who added another SIX.
We therefore selected Ellen Malterer as this week’s Player
of the Week.
