| There were just two
of our seven teams in action this past weekend; our men’s
premier team and our men’s division two team who both registered
wins to maintain their respective title challenges.
On Saturday the men’s premier game between Surrey United
and Indo Akal at Cloverdale turf featured a top of the table versus
bottom of the table inter divisional clash and after a very impressive
start to this season Surrey managed to extend their win streak to
eight straight victories winning 1-0 on this occasion. However,
let it be said, they did so producing their poorest performance
of the year in a game where it was the visitors who impressed and
out-chanced the home team. Indo were denied goals twice by the woodwork
in the second half and were further thwarted by three brilliant
saves by United keeper Drew Smiley who was simply outstanding and
clearly won the game for Surrey. In the opening period, Surrey looked
busy and appeared to have a valid claim for a penalty when Cam Wilson
was brought down in the penalty area but there was no whistle on
the play and Indo successfully survived the incident. The second
half was more entertaining and produced some exciting moments at
both ends of the field. Surrey striker Shawn Blakeway had an effort
well saved by Indo veteran keeper Didar Sandhu who was finally beaten
in the 75th minute when Surrey United centre-back Tom Elliot headed
home from close range following a Todd Stauber cross form a corner-kick.
Indo responded valiantly and surged forward relentlessly in search
of an equalizer, that their inspired play deserved, but unfortunately
for them Smiley had other ideas in mind and he was a giant in successfully
preserving his shut-out and securing the three points for Surrey.
The men’s division two secured a 3-0 away victory over Bombastic
to maintain their second placed position in the standings team in
their division and thanks to a two goal performance from division
one team captain Matt Osborne.
United opened strongly and took the lead at the six minute mark
when Brad Werbowski lashed a fifteen yard shot into the net following
a broken play.

Despite plenty of pressure United were unable to convert their
territorial advantage into any further first half goals but one
minute after the re-start Joe Matijasevic and Dave Morris combined
to provide the speedy Osborne with a breakaway and normally a defender
he tucked the ball away with the confidence of a proven goal-scorer.
United dominated throughout the half but failed to add to their
tally until Osborne broke clear again in the 89th minute to notch
his second goal of the game.
Drew Smiley who produced a series of fine saves to preserve the
shut-out and essentially win the game for the men’s premier
team was this week’s winner Player of the Week Award. Each
Weekly Winner will have their name entered into a random draw for
the monthly prize of for Dinner for Two.
