| The men's masters team started the weekend off with a Friday night game against Delta Metro at John Oliver park and successfully extended their win streak to 16 games . However, the game ended up being a little closer than expected with United winning by a 2-1 margin. The Delta team took the lead after ten minutes but United striker Daryl Holmes notched the equalizer five minutes later with a spectacular diving header. Surrey dominated the play but squandered several scoring chances until five minutes before half-time when Doug Muirhead scored what proved to be the game winning goal from the penalty spot after Murray Howes had been fouled in the penalty area. United continued to squander more chances throughout the second half and then had to survive a hectic final few minutes as Delta put them under pressure in an effort to tie the game and make United pay for their lack-lustre finishing. However, the masters held firm to win.
In division one action, the young United reserve team took on a much older and bigger Sapperton reserve team as they had done two weeks earlier but this time turned the tables on the home side by winning 2-0 and in the process regained possession of first place in the division. United's faster forwards caused Sapperton problems right from the kick-off and after hitting the post with an earlier effort, it was 17year old Harpreet Khakh who opened the scoring when he fired the ball into the open net from fifteen yards. 16 year old teammate Scott MacDonald set up the easy chance when he squared the ball perfectly after outwitting the opposing goalkeeper and defender. United created many more chances but they squandered good opportunities to increase their lead with some hurried finishing that prevented them from increasing their lead. United added the insurance marker early in the second half with a flowing move that saw Ryan Reynolds and Matt Osborne combine well to present MacDonald with a chance which he hammered home from fifteen yards. United should have increased their lead five minutes later when they were awarded a penalty shot after MacDonald was once again taken down this time though in the penalty area. The usually dependable VMSL all-star captain Steve Millar this time hit the bar with his effort. The woodwork robbed United once more when a fine solo run by Osborne saw his powerful right foot shot rebound off both posts before being scrambled away. Sapperton had some pressure late in the game but were denied by a strong performance from the United defence where 17 year old Gurjit Sandhu had an excellent game and where premier goalkeeper Paul Shepherd added his experience to record the shut-out.
In men's division two action, on Saturday, Surrey United was eliminated from cup play when they lost 2-1 in a close game against Westside Rino, another quality division two team. Westside struck first catching United off-guard, early in the game, after only twelve minutes of play. However, United bounced back to level the scores six minutes later when Brendan Wilkinson hammered home the loose ball following a hectic goal mouth scramble. With the game ebbing back and forth both teams had chances to score but it was Westside who delivered the vital blow one minute before half-time to give then the lead that they never surrendered. United surged forward valiantly in the second half as they tried their best to level the score again but were denied on two separate occasions when their shots struck the goal-post to suggest that this was not going to be their day.
In men's premier team action United took on and beat Sapperton Rovers 3-1 in the Imperial Cup at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday to record their third win over the New Westminster based club this season. United who started well had to come from behind to record the victory as they surrendered an early goal against the run of play when Sapperton centre-back Kent Waechter headed home a Mike Favarro free-kick at the fifteen minute mark. Surrey equalized ten minutes later from a free-kick of their own when Todd Stauber's pass found Gareth Wilkshire on the right and the Surrey full-back hammered a swerving right foot twenty five yard shot that took a hint of a deflection on its way into the top of the net past Sapperton keeper Cory Breure. Surrey came surging forward and deservedly took the lead, at the thirty five minute mark when striker Ryan Hopp hammered home a low shot from fifteen yards. Sapperton were fortunate not to surrender a further goal two minutes before the break, when Surrey forward Cam Wilson weaved his way past two defenders before squaring the ball to set-up a golden opportunity for United midfielder Vince Stewart who lifted his shot over the cross-bar. |

While Sapperton enjoyed some territorial advantage in the early part of the second half they were thwarted by some resilient defending from Surrey where centre-backs Steve Millar and Tom Elliot dominated Kevin Hearn and Luke Hogan and on the rare occasions they were beaten Drew Smiley was there in net to produce the saves for Surrey. However, it was always Surrey who looked the more likely team to score goals and both Wilson and Wilkshire came close to stretching the home side's lead. Surrey, did finally grab the insurance marker in the seventieth minute when substitute and former national team player Niall Thompson showed some quick thinking. His swiftly taken free-kick caught the Sapperton defence by surprise when he sent the speedy Cam Wilson racing down the left, before the fleet-footed youngster cut in past two defenders and hammered a low shot past a stunned Breure. Surrey, were in no mood to permit any late heroics from Sapperton and firmly closed the door to enable them to move on to the next round.
In Ladies premier action our ladies premier team, who were missing four players on National team duty and a further four players through injury were forced to play their league cup game against Poco Premier with ten players as the league rules will not permit the call up of youth players. Our ladies fell behind early in the game but United tied up the game through Megan Blaker at the twenty minute mark. The balance of the game saw United enjoy a massive territorial advantage but they were unable to convert on their numerous opportunities. With the game still tied at regulation the teams went straight to penalty shoot-out where United prevailed 4-1 to secure the bonus point. Blaker, Kate Qually, Bianca Wilkinson and Chelsey Hannesson all successfully converted on their shots and then the win was secured by United keeper Theresa Nuttall who brilliantly saved two of the Poco spot shots.
