| The men's masters team started the weekend off with a Friday night turf game against Langley All Blacks and was determined to extend their win streak to 14 games and maintain their five point lead at the top of the table. They successfully accomplished both goals, although the game ended up being a little closer than expected with United winning by a margin of 3-1 thanks to a pair of successfully converted penalty shots courtesy of midfielder Doug Muirhead late in the second half. United had taken the early lead at the ten minute mark when Robin Regnier scored his second goal for the club but Surrey's joy was short lived as Langley equalized five minutes later. The game remained fairly evenly balanced until Muirhead notched the first of his two spotters in the 66 th minute adding the second with ten minutes remaining.
The men's premier team took on and beat Sapperton Rovers1-0 at Cloverdale Athletic on Saturday in a game that was played in a gale force wind that presented some extremely difficult challenges for both teams. The win mathematically clinched the divisional title for Surrey which is their fourth such honour in the past five years. Surrey were forced to play against the wind in the first half and that added pressure saw them spend much of the early game in their own half of the field but they were still able to break forward and create some good chances for themselves. Midfielder, Dave Hleucka flashed a header wide of the post and fellow midfielder Vince Stewart saw his low fifteen yard angled drive roll agonizingly the wrong side of the upright. Sapperton had plenty of territorial pressure winning a series of corners which proved difficult to defend and they came close to scoring when a floated shot took off in the wind and clipped the Surrey cross-bar before being scrambled clear by a desperate Surrey defence. With the ferocious wind at their backs in the second half, Surrey surged forward in search of goals and piled on the pressure. Vinny Stewart almost converted following a corner-kick but the ball slapped against the cross-bar. However, Surrey finally got the all important breakthrough in the seventieth minute when substitute Justin Carvery fed the ball through to Surrey's leading scorer Shawn Blakeway who steered a low shot past a diving Cory Breure in the Sapperton goal. Surrey's masterful defence, aided by the strong wind, were in no mood to surrender a goal and they kept the ball constantly in the Sapperton half of the field to register their third successive shut-out with Paul Shepherd this time undertaking the net- minding duties.
In division one action between the same two clubs the young United reserve team took on a much older and bigger Sapperton reserve team. The wind was the same massive factor as in the earlier game and United's youngsters bolstered by premier keeper Drew Smiley did fantastic to keep the Sapperton team at bay against the wind until first half injury time when Sapperton took the lead after United failed to clear a vicious in-swinging corner. The goal was a back-breaker coming at the time it did but Surrey went about trying to search for the equalizer in the second half and should have scored at least one goal. However, youngsters Marko Maci and Craig Riley both showed a little inexperience as they fired shots recklessly over the bar when simple placement was all that was required. Sapperton's experience and greater physical presence proved to be too much of a factor and they grabbed an insurance marker on a breakaway late in the game. Surrey United and Sapperton are now level atop the division one standings but Sapperton have the games in hand advantage.
In division two action, Surrey United registered another impressive victory to beat Croatia 4-1 and in doing so vaulted to the top of the standings over the idle first placed team B.C. Romania who are now a point behind but have two games in hand. United jumped out into an early lead when Brad Werbowski scored the opening goal at the ten minute mark but the killer goal and eventual game winner came one minute before half-time when Ezra Fenwick sidefooted home from twelve yards out. The second half was dominated by Surrey who added further goals from Joe Matijasevic and Brendan Wilkinson with Croatia sandwiching a consolation marker between these two goals. |

In Division one ladies action our division one "C" team which has clinched second place in the division registered another emphatic win in league cup play beating Shamrock Rovers 5-0 at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday. Our ladies took a little time to get going but score their first of five unanswered goals at the 15-minute mark. The play developed with striker Krystle Gauvin trapping an errant goal kick by Richmond's keeper and then slipping a pass to outside midfielder Courtney Duncan, whose fierce shot, was only parried by the visiting keeper allowing United striker Ally Pross to sweep home the rebound. Duncan increased United's lead at the thirty three minute mark with another powerful rising shot after a flowing move again featuring Gauvin and midfielder Taryne Clancy. United continued to press and had two goals called back for offside and in addition missed some great opportunities that if converted would have put the game well out of reach in the first half. The second half started with Richmond maintaining their strong physical play and their first half-tactical strategy of playing the off side trap. However, United made some key attacking adjustments and were able to better exploit this strategy by adding three further goals in the second frame. United striker and leading scorer Ally Pross potted two more goals to complete her hat trick with midfielder Taryne Clancy adding the other marker. Captain Krystle Gauvin figured in on four of the five goals scored in the match and United got other notable strong performances from Duncan and Clancy in midfield and Chelsea Redburn and Nicole Stewart in defence.
Our other ladies team suffered a heavy defeat losing 5-0 to North Shore Hearts on Sunday evening.
