This was a critical weekend with many of our teams involved in games that could go along way to determine their place in the season ending standings including winning their respective divisions.

Firstly the men' premier team needed a win against West Van Trollers at Cloverdale on Saturday to clinch their division but will have to wait at least for another opportunity next week as they tied 0-0. The team produced a fine overall performance and came close to scoring on a number of occasions in the first half with centre-back Tom Elliot flashing two headers wide of the target and man of the match midfielder Vince Stewart saw his twenty yard rising drive just graze the upright. West Van came close on one of their counter-attacks that saw United full-back Clayton Dobbin deflect a header onto his own cross-bar. A minute before the half came a controversial moment in the game when United's Cam Wilson broke down the left and then appeared to pull the ball back for teammate Justin Carvery to tap into the net but the officials denied the goal with an off side decision. In the second half, United pressed forward relentlessly in search of a goal but were thwarted by some desperate rugged defence from a spirited West Vancouver side. Surrey's Ryan Hopp and Shawn Blakeway had efforts scrambled off the goal line and then with fifteen minutes later Surrey centre-back Steve Millar hammered a twenty yard free-kick off the cross-bar which then saw the ball bounce down and cross the line before being scrambled away. It was clear that it wasn't going to be Surrey's day to score and at the other end of the park with United's defence in complete domination of the West Van attack the game ended goalless.

In the first division game the West Vancouver team forfeited the points as they could not field a team.

In division two action United clobbered their opponents Nomads by an 8-0 margin and continued to narrow the gap on the first placed team. United built up a 5-0 lead by the interval, to put the outcome of the game beyond doubt, and then added a further three goals in the second frame. Both Chris Roots and Nick Gollogly helped themselves to hat-ticks in the goal spree with Nick also chipping in with a couple of assists. United's other tallies came from Brendan Wilkinson and a rare goal from Josh Possey whose shot apparently ended up in the net courtesy of two deflections and a post.

Our Masters team faced the Surrey FC Firefighter Rangers in what was the tilt of the season with the winner of the game being firmly in the driver's seat to win the league title.  Surrey United was missing some key players but nevertheless were able to field a strong team that ended up winning by a convincing margin of 4-1 to increase their lead in the division to 5pts over the second placed Firefighter Rangers.  United had to come from behind to win after going down a goal after only ten minutes when what looked to be a miss-hit cross that drifted into the top corner over the outstretched arms of United keeper Angelo Bonato.

However, United fought back with determination and equalized at the thirty minute mark with a goal from Murray Howes.  The Rangers pressed hard for the remaining 15minutes of the first half, but United was able to withstand the pressure. The second half was pretty much all Surrey United as they dominated for long periods of play. Howes got his second of the match after a build up from the back line and then Doug Muirhead scored Surrey United's third with a wicked swerving free kick that had goal written allover it the moment it left his foot. Howes rounded out the scoring and completed his hat-trick thanks to teammate Daryl Holmes who created a turn over and then beat the Rangers keeper before unselfishly allowing Howes to tuck the ball into the unguarded net.

Surrey United premier ladies had their league game postponed at Kinsman Stadium which allowed their rivals UBC to move temporarily into first place in the standings after they had beaten Coquitlam earlier in the week.

In division one action our "B" team were unable to help out our "C" by beating the first placed Chilliwack team and our ladies lost 3-0 at home despite holding the opposition to a one goal margin until very late in the game.

Our division one "C" ladies visited the Aldergrove Wanderers on Sunday at Parkside and took charge of the match right from the opening whistle. For the most part of the first half United would not allow Aldergrove to move out of their own half of the field. The Aldergrove keeper however, was up to the challenge and turned away countless shots as United surged forward relentlessly. However, Aldergrove finally cracked at the eighteen minute mark when United striker and leading goalscorer Ally Pross hammered a glorious rising shot from a free-kick over the defensive wall and into the net. United added a second goal at 28minute mark when midfielder Lexi Iggulden headed home Nicole Stewart's driven cross. The third goal of the opening frame came from a short corner taken by Pross who found midfielder Taryne Clancy who in turn laid off a perfect ball for sweeper Nicole Stewart to hammer into the back of the Aldergove net. The second half for United proved to be the Taryne Clancy show as she potted two goals and added another assist as United added four goals in their 7-0 romp over the home team. Teammates Jackie Hansen and Krystle Gauvin both added single markers to complete the scoring with United keeper Kendra Klemke earning one of her easiest shut-outs.

There were several notable performances worthy of player of the week consideration this weekend including Taryne Clancy's two goal and two assist performance, and Nick Gollogly's three goal and two assist performance however we have selected master's striker Murray Howes as this week's Player of the week for his hat-trick in the biggest and toughest game of the weekend where the masters squad beat fierce rivals Surrey FC Firefighter Rangers 4-1. Each Weekly Winner will have their name entered into a random draw for the monthly prize of for Dinner for Two .
