Mens PREMIER

Surrey United Firefighters maintained their challenge for a top four finish with a 2-0 win over Norvan at Cloverdale on Saturday. Surrey started brightly and enjoyed most of the early play but were unable to convert that pressure into goals. Norvan keeper Steve London produced a great save to rob Surrey striker Angus Burke of the opening goal after Rizal Ganief had done well to create the opening. Finally after almost 40 minutes of constant pressure United scored just before the interval when Burke broke down the left and fired in a low range shot that London pushed away but it fell at the feet of United striker Lucas Barrett who tucked the ball into the net. In the second half United continued to take the game to the visitors and London topped his earlier save with an even better point blank save to beat out a Burke volley after Ganief had again supplied the cross. Norvan drew comfort from United's inability to close out the game and came more into the game creating a couple of close range efforts which they fired recklessly wide of the target. Then on another occasion they were denied by a brilliant save from United keeper Drew Smiley who turned away a goal bound shot for a corner. However with ten minutes remaining Burke again broke down the left and fired over a cross which midfielder Tyler Rosenlund hammered at goal from eight yards which ended up in the net despite the valiant saving attempt by London who somehow got his hands to the ball but could not take the full venom out of the powerful shot. .The win sees United move into second place and brings an added importance to next week’s game against first placed West Vancouver.

Mens CAT “A” DIVISION

Surrey United Mens Cat “A” entertained Sapperton amidst the snowstorm on Sunday and lost 2-1 in an entertaining game. United started brightly and deservedly took the lead in the 11th minute when Trevor Tagieff set up fellow striker ezra Fenwick who slotted home his fourth goal of the season. United held the lead until half-time but Sapperton drew level midway through the second frame on a penalty kick awarded for a handball in the penalty area.ten minutes later Sapperton grabbed the winner from open play to secure the three points.

Mens CAT “B” DIVISION

Surrey United’s CAT “B” was postponed due to field closure but sees them firmly atop the division and represents a very impressive start for this first year team.

Mens MASTERS

Surrey came up short on Friday night suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of second from bottom Cliff Avenue. It was a particularly disappointing loss as United dominated most of the game but were unable to register a goal unlike their opponents who scored on two of their three goal attempts. Most of the first half was one way traffic with United controlling virtually all of the play but some woeful play in the final third saw them waste their territorial advantage. The writing was on the wall as on one of their isolated breakaways Cliff Avenue forced United keeper Angelo Bonato into a great save brilliantly tipping a goal bound shot over the cross-bar. The second half followed the same pattern as the first and then midway through the second frame Cliff Avenue broke the deadlock scoring when their fast forward outpaced the United rearguard and slotted the ball past the advancing Bonato. United responded well and hit the bar with a Kelly Bey header and then Darren Villars broke through to lift a shot over the advancing keeper only to see his sot drift agonizingly wide of the upright. With United pushing forward in search of the equalizer Cliff Avenue got the insurance marker five minutes from time to secure all three points for the visitors.
