Mens PREMIER

Surrey United enjoyed the better of the opening encounters with ICFS Inter and came close to scoring on a few occasions but for all their territorial advantage it was Surrey's keeper Drew Smiley who had to pull off a great save in the 28th minute to deny the opposition a goal on one of Inter's quick counter attacks. However, Surrey deservedly the took the lead in the thirty fifth minute when a short corner between Tyler Rosenlund and Angus Burke paid off when Lucas Barrett back heeled Rosenlund's cross into the net from close range. Three minutes later United added a second when Burke re-acted the quickest when he pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and hammered a shot into the net. Just before the break, Inter was reduced to 10 men when they had a player red carded for remarks made to the referee. Two minutes after the interval Surrey added a third when a neat chip over the Inter defence by Rizal Ganief sent Andrew Proctor racing through and he hammered a shot from fifteen yards past the keeper and into the net. United made some substitutions in the 60th minute and it paid off immediately when 17year old Joseph Martin, with his first touch of the game, out-jumped the Inter defenders to head home a superlative right wing cross from Burke. Ten minutes later Martin added his second goal of the game and completed the Surrey scoring when he met a Rosenlund cross at the far post and blasted a right foot shot into the top corner. 17 year old Graham Spink had an outstanding game in the backline for the Surrey United squad. The win extended Surrey's unbeaten streak to twelve premier games with their last defeat somewhat ironically coming at the hands of Inter on the 22nd November 2009. This victory when coupled with the subsequent defeat of West Vancouver by ICST Pegasus on Saturday secured the VMSL premier championship title for Surrey United for the fourth time since they joined the VMSL some 11 seasons ago.

Mens CAT “A” DIVISION

United completed their final league game of the season beating lowly Friends United by a 2-1 margin at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday. United’s Trevor Tagieff opened the scoring midway through the first half on a fine set-up by Chris Roots. The visitors tied up the game in the early part of the second half before Rodrigo casio fired home the game-winner.

Mens CAT “B” DIVISION

No Scheduled game.

 Mens MASTERS

United advanced to the next round of the cup by beating first division opponents, Meralomas, at Cloverdale Athletic on Sunday by a 1-0 score-line. Surrey dominated the entire game from start to finish but despite all their territorial advantage had to wait until the 85th minute to grab a game-winner. A neat set-up play between Mike Marini and Mike Schue created an opportunity for midfielder Carson Drayson who finished off the move neatly dispatching the ball into the old onion bag.

Ladies PREMIER

United’s premier Ladies faced Langley on Sunday at Cloverdale in the league cup and emerged victorious with a 5-1 victory after spotting the opposition the first goal of the game on a miscue by Surrey goalkeeper Theresa Nuttall at the ten minute mark. Despite being a goal behind Surrey maintained their composure and responded strongly. Within two minutes they leveled the scores when Kaitlen Young hammered the ball home from close range after a precisely measured right wing cross from Ally Benes. Three minutes later United scored again when great link-up play between Natalie Halcro and Rachel Pelat resulted in a fine right wing cross from Pelat that midfielder Nicole Stewart spectacularly volleyed into the net from twenty yards. United increased their lead shortly before half-time when good combination play between Katie Thorlakson and Kailen Kyle saw the latter cleverly chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. In the second half United continued to dominate without ever getting into top gear and Halcro who was impressive throughout made a fine run down the right before crossing for April Coffin to force the ball home from close range. United completed the scoring in the 70th minute when Pelat, who had a fine game, dribbled past two defenders down the right before cutting inside to drive home a low shot into the corner of the net.

Ladies DIVISION ONE

The game started slowly with both sides having equal offensive opportunities until about the 17 minutes mark of the opening half when United opened the scoring. Kelsey Ingram fired a cross into the path of striker Claire McKinnon, whose hard shot was well saved by the Delta keeper but she only deflected it into the path of Leah Coffin, who made no mistake driving the ball into Delta's net. The remainder of the first half saw both sides make some strong offensive drives, with the majority going to Surrey but neither side were able to take advantage of any scoring opportunities. United added a second goal at the re-start of the second half right off the opening whistle when a clever passing  involving Coffin and Lora Brownlow carved out an opportunity for striker Kara Santerre who lifted a great little chip over Delta's keepers head into a wide open net. United was now all fired up and only 3minutes later scored again when Coffin stripped the ball from a Delta player and quickly sent teammate Santerre racing away again and she held off two defenders before stepping around the charging keeper and finished by tapping the ball into the open net. Surrey continued to press and midway through the second half and Santerre had the ball in the net again but the referee somewhat controversially ruled off side to deny her of a hat trick goal. With fifteen minutes of the game remaining Delta scored what proved to be a consolation goal when following a scramble in the penalty area United failed to clear their lines and Delta’s shot was deflected into the net off one of the Surrey defenders. United bounced back and with only five minutes remaining Santerre, was once again robbed of her hat-trick by another dubious off-side call.

Player of the Week

This week’s Player of the Week goes to Leah Coffin who scored one and assisted on two other goals to help Ladies Division one team defeat Delta and advance into the semi-finals of the League Cup.
