Surrey United hosted newly promoted first division winners Akal at Cloverdale on Saturday and emerged with a 2-0 victory to advance to the finals of the Imperial Cup. United opened the scoring in the 8th minute of the game when a superbly timed far-post run by Steve McAuley to beat the offside trap saw him head Rob Wilson's cross back into the middle for Angus Burke to slot the ball home from close range. Surrey controlled most of the play and enjoyed a considerable territorial advantage as Akal were content to play a defensive game hoping to catch the Premier Champions on the counter-attack. In the second half it was much the same story and United had the ball in the net in the sixtieth minute when Lucas Barrett latched onto a mistimed header by an Akal defender and crashed the ball into the net past the advancing keeper. However, the referee ruled the goal off-side.! It was not Barrett's day because five minutes later he flicked a great cross from Stefan Leslie against the cross-bar and then two minutes later saw another effort cleared off the line by a defender, with the goalkeeper beaten on the play. However, with four minutes remaining Barrett got the goal he deserved firing a low shot into the corner of the net from fifteen yards after Leslie had combined with substitute Justin Carvery to set-up the play. Throughout the game United's defence was rock solid with McAuley, Leslie, Wilson and Myles Davis all in such commanding form that keeper Drew Smiley did not have a to make a save in earning the shut-out.
