Mens PREMIER

Surrey United were hopeful to return to winning ways against Columbus following last week's surprise defeat to Westside and the Firefighters got an early shock this week when Columbus took the lead after only four minutes when Aaron Keay's brilliantly floated cross picked out Tiernan King who hammered the ball home from twenty yards out. It was certainly gut check time for Surrey and they responded well and ten minutes later tied up the game when Tyler Rosenlund's corner kick was deflected to Jeff Skinner at the top of the box whose first time shot hit the post and rebounded to centre-back Jeff Buchanan who slotted the ball home from twelve yards. The goal ignited the Firefighters and five minutes later they took the lead when some great inter-passing between Rizal Ganief and Rosenlund sent the latter racing into the penalty area to steer a low shot past Thomas Lindley in the Columbus goal. With Surrey dominating play they added a third goal before half-time when a brilliant cross-field pass by Vince Stewart found Lucas Barrett who cut inside from the left and found Cam Wilson who turned sharply and calmly slotted the ball into the net. Columbus rallied at the start of the second half but were thwarted by some excellent defending from United's Stefan Leslie and Buchanan. Half way through the second frame United put the result out of reach when Wilson pounced again to fire home from fifteen yards after a knock-down by Ganief presented the opportunity. In the 85th minute United added a fifth when young substitute Joseph Martin collected a pass from Rob Wilson and slipped past a defender before knocking a low left foot shot into the corner of the net. The win sent Surrey back to the top of the league for the second time this season.

Mens CAT “A” DIVISION

Game report unavailable but injury ravaged United performed well but came up short at home losing 4-2 to top team West Vancouver to extend their winless streak to seven games.

Mens CAT “B” DIVISION

Surrey United continued their torrid pace at the top of the standings with a resounding 10-0 away victory against G.N. Sporting Club on Sunday evening. United started the game at a blistering pace and potted its first goal at the 2 minute mark. Dominic Garzitto slotted a left wing feed onto the foot of a surging Liam McKinnon who twisted the Sporting defender in circles, before arcing a lovely cross to Lenny Longley who one touched the ball past the central defender, then roofed a beautiful shot past the startled Sporting Keeper.  The game slowed down a little until United stepped up the pace once more and added a second goal when Kris Turcsanyi scored in the 20th minute after a great left wing feed from Andre Felicio.  Longley potted the 3rd goal at 28th minute and McKinnon put the game out of reach in the 30th min with a text book free-kick from twenty five yards that saw his perfectly curled left foot shot left footed deflect into the net off the far post with the goalkeeper a spectator on the play. It was McKinnon followed that shot up 8 minutes later with another wonderful left footed strike that caught the bottom right corner.  Sporting walked off at half time looking completely demoralized and the second half saw United bang in 5 more goals.  Corey Bergen at 50 min., Colin Grout at 59 min., Ben Baerg at 68 min.,  Kody Bell at 74 min. and then Dominic Garzitto at 77 min..

Mens MASTERS

The Masters entertained Metro-Ford in a Friday night encounter at Cloverdale Athletic park and produced one of their better performances of the season to secure an impressive 3-0 victory. The game was played in torrid conditions amidst lashing rain and howling winds but United seemed to adapt to the conditions the better and playing against the elements in the first half enjoyed good possession. They deservedly took the lead midway through the opening frame when great link up play between Mike Marini and Craig Brown culminated with Brown hammering home a powerful left foot shot into the top corner of the net from the top of the box. The conditions got even worse during the second half and Metro-Ford, playing against the wind, found it difficult to get the ball out of their own end. United got the insurance marker at the 65 minute mark with the elements playing a major part when substitute Steve McCaw’s lofted curling corner-kick eluded forwards and defenders alike and flew directly into the net much to the dismay of the visiting goalkeeper. United continued to poor forward and squandered a number of scoring chances before Murray Howes stroked home a penalty kick which was awarded after the keeper brought down Van Dyck. United’s defence looked particularly strong throughout the game with John Thernes and Robin Regnier registering fine performances and stand-in keeper Mike Shue recording the shut-out.
