Mens PREMIER

The original local Surrey derby took place between two great rivals at Newton Athletic Park on Friday night with the visiting Surrey United Firefighters prevailing over neighbours ICTS Pegasus by a 2-1 margin. United also had to do it the hard way coming from behind once again this season after the home team had taken the lead a few minutes before half-time when an unmarked Pegasus forward scored with a header at the far post following a period of sustained pressure including two successive corners. The Firefighters did have a couple of opportunities in the first frame when Rizal Ganief grazed the cross-bar from a direct free-kick and then following a fine flowing move full-back Rob Wilson steered his shot just wide of the upright. After some stern half-time words Surrey brought on a couple of veterans in the second half and their experience was instrumental in turning the game around. United piled on the pressure in search of the equalizer and were deservedly rewarded in the 65th minute when a low right wing cross from Stefan Leslie found substitute Jeff Clarke at the top of the penalty box and he slipped the defender and fired a low shot into the corner of the net. Two minutes later ICST Pegasus did themselves no favours one of their defenders was rightly red carded for a vicious tackle on United's Vince Stewart. United were now all out for the win and brought on player/coach Niall Thompson in the 74th minute and it paid immediate dividends because two minutes later Leslie set Thompson free down the right and his brilliant cross was acrobatically volleyed home by Ganief.  Pegasus tried gallantly to fight back despite being a man down and won a couple of corners but this time Surrey defended them better than they did in the early frame and were able to play out the remainder of the game.

Mens Div A CAT

Surrey United cruised to a 3-0 impressive win over Norvan Saints on Sunday at Cloverdale Athletic Park. United opened the scoring early at the twelve minute mark with a piece of pure genius from Tito Hernandez who from close to the half way line spotted the visiting keeper off his goal-line and lobbed the ball over the netminder and into the net. Five minutes later Brendan Wilkinson increased the lead when he headed the ball home after some nice set-up work by Rodrigo Casio and Trevor Tagieff. United rounded out the scoring midway through the second frame to secure the three points.

Mens Div B CAT

Surrey United CAT”B” team played Club Punjab “B” at Queen’s Park on Sunday and the game started with Surrey United controlling the play for the opening 12 minutes, knocking the ball around with real authority.  Then suddenly against the run of play a communication error between the last defender and Surrey United’s keeper resulted in the home team notching the opening goal of the game. Surrey United were not deterred and continued to control the game, keeping possession and making continuous surging runs.  Finally at the 25th minute a neat give and go between Derek Toth and Krisztian Turcsanyi, carved an opening for Tyler Tieszen who slotted the ball home for a well deserved tying goal. The home team continued to try and outmuscle the young United team but Surrey United still remained in control of the game.  Both teams made a number of changes at half time to go for the win but unfortunately all United had to show for their dominance was a number of close misses resulting in a Tie Game.  Robert Byron was Surrey United’s “Player of the Game”, playing solid in the middle of the defence.

Mens Masters

The Surrey United Masters team played defending provincial champions, Westside at Burnaby Lake on Sunday and ended up losing 1-0, however, it was a game where United deserved a better outcome. The game was evenly contested throughout the first 45 minutes until a mental breakdown by United at the 43rd minute allowed Westside to take a quick throw to a player that picked up the ball, ran a distance and unleashed a shot that caught the inside of the post and found the back of the net.

The second half was all Surrey however they just could not finish their chances.  Dave Harkison had a header saved by the Westside net-minder, a header that would have resulted in a goal against 9 out of 10 goalies.  Surrey United Angelo Bonato also did well and saved a penalty shot in the latter part of the second half to keep his team in the game but unfortunately United could not manage an equalizer and lost their first game of the season.

Ladies PREMIER

No scheduled game this weekend.

Womens Division One

Surrey United‘s "flu" ridden team lost their third one goal game of the season as they struggled to get going for the game and within the first 15 minutes surrendered two goals to the Poco Gunner. Both of Poco’s goals came off strong pressure with the first goal coming off a nice three way passing play. The second goal came from a perfectly directed header from a well struck corner kick. It took the rest of the first half for United to finally get their legs and the second half produced a much better effort for the United ladies. Surrey began to exert lots of pressure and were finally rewarded in about the 35 minute mark of the second half when a fine through ball by Nikki Carchesio found striker Tina Southerby who beat two defenders and laid off a pass to teammate Sam Pither who made no mistake driving a hard high shot into the top corner of the net. United continued to press for the equalizer but despite their hard work they were unable to convert their territorial advantage into a tying goal.

Player of the Week

This week’s Player of the Week goes to Stefan Leslie who chipped in with two assists to help the Men’s premier team record a 2-1 come from behind victory over ICST Pegasus.
