U12 Girls Tornadoes Win Coquitlam Metro Ford Thanksgiving Tournament
The
Surrey United U12G Tornadoes captured Gold this past weekend at the
Coquitlam Metro Ford Thanksgiving Tournament. With an extremely tough
draw for Saturday’s openers, the Tornadoes faced rival Coquitlam Metro
Ford Spitfires in their opening match and beat the host club 2 -0.
Cailin Letkemann opened the scoring and Kalyn Hartmann notched the
second on a beautiful individual run. Next up were the Burnaby Selects,
whom the Tornadoes have also developed a friendly rivalry with. The
Tornadoes managed a 1 – 0 win, with the goal coming off a crisp
combination passing play from Kalyn Hartmann to Jasmine Mangat to
Sabrina Anderson who buried it with her left. The girls just missed a
second marker on a header from Amy DeBoer that went wide. The Tornadoes
finished their round robin play on Sunday with a 4 – 0 victory over the
Coquitlam Metro Ford Destroyers. Goal scorers were Taylor Traaseth,
Kalyn Hartmann, Theresa Hicks & Madison Johnson. In the final on the
Thanksgiving Monday, the Tornadoes faced a very determined Burnaby
Selects team in a re-match from Saturday’s round robin game. Both teams
battled hard in an intense final. Kalyn Hartmann notched the winner for
the Tornadoes shorty before the half preserving a 1-0 tournament win.
The Tornadoes posted 4 consecutive shutouts, due in large part to the
outstanding goalkeeping of Julia Vulcano, the stellar defending of Emma
Kramer & Paige Gingras & some great defensive work by holding
midfielders Tavia Jasper and Cailin Letkemann.

SGU BOYS U/18B Champions
Congratulations to the U18B SGU Metro Team for defeating Surrey Selects 1-0 in the April 16, 2011 cup final. The lone goal was scored by Tyler Campbell from outside the 18 attacking from the left side of the field. The goalie didn't see it coming. Coach Frank McCann did a brilliant job tactically substituting players from a sparse bench. Working through adversity through the season, the entire team worked hard to get the final victory.
SGU U/14 Girls win Coastal "A" Cup
The SGU U14 Metro Girls were worthy 2-0 victors over Metro Ford Chargers on April 30, 2011 in the Coastal Cup Final. Although SGU needed extra time to finally score and secure the win, SGU dominated for most of the game with their possession, strong midfield work and excellent defending.
The first half saw SGU rattle both the crossbar and post in the first 20 minutes. Metro Ford did not really challenge other that with their attempts to play the long ball up to their lone forward. Good defensive positioning thwarted any attempts at Metro Ford doing anything significant with those attempts. SGU had a goal called back in the 65th for offside after a goalmouth scramble. Extra time again saw SGU dominate, keeping possession of the ball which finally resulted in their first goal after Meghan Wingorve dished the ball off to Jenna Baxter who unleashed a 25 yard shot over the keepers hands. This shot was literally still rising as it hit the back of the net. SGU secured the win their second goal by Gurneet Dhaliwal with the assist coming from Miki Knowler.
This game capped off a very successful season and the girls are now waiting to determine if the Interior representative team will challenge them for the Provincial Cup and the privilege of traveling to Newfoundland for the National tournament.

In addition United keeper, Danika Gill, made a two great saves to keep her team in the game. After some adjustments at the interval Surrey responded better in the second half and then halfway through the frame Chelsey Lal scored on a partial breakaway with a nice feed right up the middle. Surrey United Girls U-18 Silver A Fusion Win Classic Cup to Complete and Undefeated Season

Surrey United’s U-18 Fusion came out strong with quick give and go passes setting the tempo early and kept the pressure throughout the game. The first goal came in less than 5 minutes after a corner kick from Natalie Bajkov was controlled by Saskia Vaneyk who then layed it back to Bajkov to cross the ball back into the middle where Tina Southerby colleyed it into the net for what proved to be the game winner. In the second half, United added further goals from Alannah Blouin-Summers and Kaitlyn Gibbs that Dunbar Chaos would be unable to come back from. Kelsey Rempel had an outstanding game in defence for Surrey.
