BCSPL High-Performance Academy

You must register to attend evaluations and you must attend all evaluation dates to be considered for entry in the program.

Program Overview

The 2022/23 Surrey United SC BCSPL High-Performance Academy (HPA) is an extremely popular high-performance player development academy program for the U10-U12 (2011 - 2013 born) select players in the region that want to prepare themselves for potential future evaluations and placement in the BC Soccer Premier League at the U13 level. This program was one of the first of its kind in the region when initially begun and has been run by Surrey United SC for over a decade producing top players who have gone on to succeed at the BC Soccer Provincial Program, Whitecaps FC, Whitecaps Rex Program, and Canadian Soccer National teams.

This regionally based, high-performance academy is designed to service motivated select players by providing a competitive environment that pools players with similar technical and tactical abilities under high-performance standards. Jeff Clarke (SUSC Technical Director), Ari Adams (SUSC Assistant TD) and Ronan Kelly (SUSC Assistant TD) will be the technical leads of the program.  Ronan Kelly will be the lead instructor and will be supported by other top SUSC staff and BCSPL program coaches, There will be 11-aside opportunities for the participants throughout the program that will take place on their off days (Boys on Sundays and Girls on Saturdays).

Admittance into this program is by invitation only and players must register for and attend all evaluations to be considered for entrance into the program. This program runs Friday evenings through the season from September to February at Cloverdale Athletic Park. There will be an open evaluation for all interested players early September The final decision on numbers and placement will be made at the conclusion of the HPA evaluations; see below for all details.

All interested participants must sign-up for these evaluation sessions.  See sign-up info below

Trip to Calgary Foothills

In 2018 & 2019 SUSC took participants (primarily U12 players) of the HPA to Calgary for a soccer experience hosted by Calgary Foothills SC. The 2020 trip was cancelled due to COVID-19 and we made the decision to cancel the 2021 trip as well, for the same reasons. The decision for a 2022 trip is still under discussion and will be an additional cost to the players if this moves forward.

**Vicarious Learning - Club Technology Plan **

There will be a new match analysis component included in the HPA program, where HPA participants will be afforded the opportunity of a visual learning experience in the new SUSC clubhouse throughout the duration of the HPA program.

**Academy Team Game Opportunities**

The club will be looking at organizing additional academy games throughout the fall/winter. There will be additional costs associated with these opportunities and participation will be by invitation to selected players only.

Benefits of HPA Participation

The objective of the HPA program is to challenge and further develop players’ individual technical and tactical levels and better prepare them for future opportunities in the SUSC BCSPL program and other higher-level programming including Whitecaps FC full-time programs and BC Soccer provincial teams. In addition to the great training environment that HPA provides there are additional opportunities where selected players can showcase themselves (see below).

Recent Graduates of the HPA Program

The HPA program has an excellent track record of player development success. Over the past few years the HPA program has produced an average of 30 players/year who move on to the SUSC BCSPL program and other clubs' BCSPL intake teams. In addition, there have been several graduates who have gone on to Whitecaps FC full time programs; Pre-Residency for the boys and the REX program for the girls. These players include: Girls – Aleisha Ganief, Mikayla Tupper, Daniella Ramirez, & Amanda Clauzel. and Boys – Matteo Campagna, Jay Herdman, Josh Tome, Carson AJ Twells, Christopher Torressan & Joel Demian. In 2018 former SUSC HPA participant Simon Colyn (17 years-old) signed an MLS Homegrown contract with the Whitecaps FC Men's team! In 2019 HPA academy graduate Zach Verhoeven signed in the Canadian Professional League. You can be the next one!

Key Program Features

  • Position-Specific Training (age-appropriate)

All players are trained in general position-specific methods and sessions. These sessions will be tailored to U10 - U12 players and will be an introductory version of the highly successful program that the SUSC BCSPL players receive.

  • Player Feedback Reports

All participants will receive written progress reports at both the halfway and endpoints of the program.

  • Soccer Specific Speed and Fitness Testing

We will be hosting fitness testing similar to the testing done within the SUSC BCSPL program. The scores will be kept to measure personal player improvement over the year(s).

  • Low Coach: Player ratio

The HPA program will run with an approx. Coach:Player ratio of 1:12. This low ratio will allow each player to receive the personal attention that is required.
