BCSPL High Performance Academy

2020/21 BCSPL High-Performance Academy

High-Performance Academy Program Overview

Surrey United Soccer Club (SUSC) is excited to offer its BCSPL High-Performance Academy (HPA) development program for the U10-U12 (2009 - 2011 born) select players in the region. This program is going into its 10th year and has produced some top players who have gone on to succeed at the BC Soccer HPP level, Whitecaps FC, and Canadian Soccer Association, teams.

This regionally based, high-performance academy is the first club-based academy of its kind in the Province and is designed to service motivated select players by providing a competitive environment that pools players with similar technical and tactical abilities under high-quality participation standards. Jeff Clarke (SUSC Technical Director), Ari Adams (SUSC Assistant TD), and Liam Carter (SUSC Assistant TD) will be the technical leads of the program.  Liam Carter will be the lead instructor and will be supported by other top coaches from the SUSC BCSPL program and club. Where permissible under the current and appropriate BC Soccer and ViaSport Phase of Play, there will be 11-aside opportunities for the participants that will take place on their off days (Boys on Sundays and Girls on Saturdays).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SUSC will implement its SAFE RTP Curriculum, which will correspond with the guidelines & restrictions from ViaSport, BC Soccer, and Canada Soccer. The overall program will operate within the SUSC Return to Play Plan. The SAFE RTP Curriculum will adjust with each update by ViaSport and BC Soccer. Further details provided below.

This HPA program is geared towards motivated players looking

to advance their current skill and playing level under the

guidance of the SUSC Technical Staff. The SAFE RTP

Curriculum will involve a broad range of skills and drills in

technical/tactical development of the game including speed and

agility, shooting and finishing, defending technique, creative

attacking, etc. The weekly training is designed to directly assist

the players in their personal playing performances throughout

their soccer season. There will also be introductory physical

training and testing for these young soccer players.

There will be limited registrations accepted into this year’s

program due to social distancing restrictions and limited field resources. This means we will be able to accommodate fewer participants than we have had in this program in previous years. The final decision on numbers and placement will be made at the conclusion of the HPA evaluations scheduled for Sept. 11th & 14th, see below for all details. All interested participants must sign-up for these evaluation sessions.

The last 2 seasons SUSC has taken participants of the HPA to Calgary for a soccer experience hosted by Calgary Foothills SC. Due to COVID-19, we are looking at all different possibilities for an experience like this, including delaying travel to spring 2021 and/or meeting Calgary Foothills in a neutral location, such as Kamloops. More information on this to follow in the coming months as Return to Play possibilities evolve.

There will be a new match analysis component included in the HPA program, where HPA participants will be afforded the opportunity of a visual learning experience in the new SUSC clubhouse throughout the duration of the HPA program.

**Academy Team Game Opportunities**

Last season the SUSC HPA created game opportunities for HPA participants against opposition from surrounding clubs and private academies and it is expected to continue in the 2020/21 program as Return to Play parameters permit.  There will be additional costs associated with these opportunities and participation will be by invitation to selected players only.

Benefits of HPA Participation

The objective of the HPA program is to challenge and further develop players’ individual technical and tactical levels and better prepare them for future opportunities in the SUSC BCSPL program and other higher-level programming including Whitecaps FC full-time programs and BC Soccer provincial teams. In addition to the great training environment that HPA provides there are additional opportunities where selected players can showcase themselves. (see below).

Recent Graduates of the HPA Program

The HPA program has an excellent track record of player development success. Over the past few years the HPA program has produced an average of 30 players/year who move on to the SUSC BCSPL program and other BCSPL clubs’ intake teams. In addition, there have been several graduates who have gone on to Whitecaps FC full time programs; Pre-Residency for the boys and the REX program for the girls. These players include: Girls – Aleisha Ganief, Mikayla Tupper, Daniella Ramirez, Amanda Clauzel, & Olyvia Hleucka and Boys – Matteo Campagna, Jay Herdman, Josh Tome, Carson Muter, Sebastian Gomez, Connor McLean, & Joel Demian. In 2018 former SUSC HPA participant Sebastian Colyn (17 years-old) signed an MLS Homegrown contract with the Whitecaps FC Men's team!

Player Feedback Reports

All participants will receive written progress reports at both the halfway and end points of the program.

Soccer Specific Speed and Fitness Testing

We will be hosting fitness testing similar to the testing done within the SUSC BCSPL program. The scores will be kept to measure personal player improvement over the year(s).
