Surrey, BC — September 25, 2025 — Surrey United Soccer Club (SUSC) proudly marked a major milestone today with the official groundbreaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art covered turf training facility at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The event brought together a dynamic mix of local leaders, soccer legends, and community members to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter for community and sport in Surrey.
The ceremony was attended by Canadian soccer icon Bob Lenarduzzi and former professional player and SUSC Sporting Director Jeff Clarke, whose presence underscored the club’s deep roots in Canadian soccer. Also in attendance were Mayor Brenda Locke and Councillor Bains, Ali Wilkinson, SUSC President, and members of the SUSC Board of Directors. Representatives from Surrey United joined the event with project partners, Liberty Construction Management and RBC to officially break ground, symbolizing the rich community engagement in this legacy project.
“Surrey United has long been a pillar of youth sport in our city, and today’s groundbreaking signals our commitment to growing that legacy” said Mayor Brenda Locke.
Jeff Clarke, SUSC Sporting Director and a key figure in the club’s strategic development, added, “This project is about giving back to the community that shaped us. We’re building a space where kids can dream big, train hard, and feel supported every step of the way and where the community can come together in a positive way for many years in the future.”
The event featured remarks from SUSC leadership, ceremonial shovels in the ground, and a community celebration that included players, families, and supporters. Liberty Construction Management, the firm leading the build, expressed both pride and enthusiasm in delivering a facility that reflects the club’s high standards and community spirit.
"We share a collective responsibility to leave the world better than we found it. Our leadership team continues to be driven to leave SUSC and Cloverdale with safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces where community can thrive and our youth can be supported and inspired to become the leaders of tomorrow" - SUSC President, Ali Wilkinson
